A Schengen visa is your gateway to 29 European countries with a single visa stamp. For Indian travellers, it is one of the most sought-after — and sometimes most confusing — visa categories. Whether you are planning a Paris honeymoon, a Swiss Alps trek, or a multi-country Eurotrip, this guide walks you through everything: from document checklists to embassy interview tips.
What Is the Schengen Visa?
The Schengen Area is a zone of 29 European countries that have abolished internal border controls, allowing free movement within the zone. A Schengen visa (Type C — short-stay visa) allows you to travel across all member states for up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
Once you have a Schengen visa stamped by, say, France, you can freely travel to Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, and all other Schengen countries during the same trip without additional visas.
Schengen Member Countries (2026)
The following 29 countries are part of the Schengen Area:
| Region | Countries |
|---|---|
| Western Europe | France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Switzerland |
| Southern Europe | Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Malta |
| Northern Europe | Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland |
| Central/Eastern Europe | Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania |
| Baltic States | Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania |
| Other | Liechtenstein |
Note: Bulgaria, Romania, and Croatia joined the Schengen Area in 2024–2025 with full land border integration. The UK and Ireland are NOT part of Schengen and require separate visas.
Types of Schengen Visa
- Type C (Short Stay) — The most common. Valid for tourism, business, family visits, medical treatment, or short courses. Max 90 days in 180 days.
- Single Entry — You can enter the Schengen Area once. Once you leave, the visa is no longer valid.
- Double Entry — Allows you to enter and re-enter the Schengen Area twice.
- Multiple Entry — Lets you enter and exit as many times as you want during the visa validity (could be 1 year, 3 years, or even 5 years). Each stay must not exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.
First-time applicants from India typically receive a single-entry visa valid for the exact dates of travel. With a good travel history, subsequent applications often yield multiple-entry visas with longer validity.
Schengen Visa Requirements for Indian Citizens
Documents Checklist
- Passport — Valid for at least 3 months beyond your return date, with at least 2 blank pages. Must have been issued within the last 10 years.
- Visa application form — Completed and signed. Available on the embassy or VFS Global website.
- Passport-size photographs — 2 recent photos (35mm x 45mm), white background, taken within the last 6 months.
- Travel insurance — Minimum coverage of EUR 30,000 (approx. ₹2,80,000), valid across all Schengen states. Must cover medical emergencies and repatriation.
- Flight reservation — A confirmed round-trip booking or a dummy flight ticket. Embassies do NOT require you to buy actual tickets before the visa is approved.
- Hotel reservation — Confirmed bookings for your entire stay, or a letter of invitation if staying with family/friends. Visank provides free dummy hotel reservations.
- Travel itinerary — Day-by-day plan showing cities, activities, and transport between destinations.
- Bank statements — Last 3 to 6 months, showing a healthy balance. Rule of thumb: at least EUR 60–80 (₹5,500–₹7,500) per day of stay.
- Income proof — Salary slips (last 3 months), ITR for last 2 years, or business registration documents for self-employed applicants.
- Cover letter — A brief letter explaining the purpose of your visit, travel dates, and why you will return to India.
- Leave approval letter — From your employer, confirming approved leave and your intention to return to work.
- Old passports — If you have previous travel history (especially to Schengen countries, US, UK, or other developed nations), submit old passports as evidence.
Where to Apply — Choosing the Right Embassy
You must apply at the embassy or consulate of your main destination — the country where you will spend the most nights. If you are spending equal time in multiple countries, apply to the country of first entry.
Most Schengen countries in India outsource visa processing to VFS Global or TLS Contact. Appointments can be booked online. In busy seasons (April–June), slots fill up fast — book 4–6 weeks ahead.

Schengen Visa Fees for Indians (2026)
| Category | Embassy Fee | VFS Service Fee | Total (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adults | EUR 90 (~₹8,400) | ~₹2,200 | ~₹10,600 |
| Children (6–11 years) | EUR 45 (~₹4,200) | ~₹2,200 | ~₹6,400 |
| Children (under 6) | Free | ~₹2,200 | ~₹2,200 |
The Schengen visa fee was increased from EUR 80 to EUR 90 in June 2024. Payment is accepted at the VFS centre at the time of submission — typically in INR at the prevailing exchange rate. The fee is non-refundable even if your visa is rejected.
Processing Time
The standard processing time is 15 calendar days from the date of submission. However, during peak season (summer, Christmas, Diwali travel), it can extend to 30–45 days. Some embassies (France, Germany) are generally faster (7–10 working days), while others (Italy, Greece) may take longer.
We recommend applying at least 6–8 weeks before your travel date. You can apply as early as 6 months before departure.
Common Reasons for Schengen Visa Rejection
- Insufficient funds — Low bank balance or recent large deposits that look suspicious.
- Incomplete documents — Missing bank statements, unsigned forms, or expired travel insurance.
- No travel history — A blank passport with no prior international stamps (not always a deal-breaker, but a risk factor).
- Weak ties to India — No property, no job, no family — the embassy fears you might overstay.
- Inconsistent itinerary — Your hotel bookings don't match your flight dates, or your cover letter contradicts your application form.
- Fake documents — Never submit forged bank statements or fake employment letters. Embassies have sophisticated verification systems.
- Previous visa violations — Overstaying on a previous visa or being deported from any country.
- Applying to the wrong embassy — If your main destination is Italy but you applied at the French embassy, your application may be rejected.
Tips to Improve Your Chances of Approval
- Build travel history — Visit visa-free or easy e-visa countries (Thailand, Turkey, Sri Lanka) before applying for Schengen. A well-stamped passport shows you are a genuine traveller who returns home.
- Show strong financial standing — Maintain a healthy bank balance for at least 3 months. Avoid last-minute deposits.
- Provide a clear itinerary — Day-by-day plans with transport, hotel, and activities make your application convincing.
- Use dummy reservations wisely — Do not buy actual flight tickets before visa approval. Use Visank's free dummy flight and hotel reservations instead — they look professional and are accepted by all Schengen embassies.
- Get good travel insurance — Don't skimp on this. Buy from a reputable provider with EUR 30,000+ coverage.
- Write a compelling cover letter — Mention your job, income, family in India, purpose of visit, and why you will return. Keep it concise and honest.
- Apply in the off-season — January–March and September–November generally have shorter processing times.
- Keep originals ready — Some VFS centres ask for original bank statements, ITR acknowledgements, and employment letters.
Step-by-Step Application Process
- Step 1: Determine your main destination and find the corresponding embassy or VFS centre.

- Step 4: Book an appointment at the VFS Global or TLS Contact centre.
- Step 5: Attend the appointment — submit documents and provide biometrics (fingerprints and photograph).

- Step 7: Track your application online using the reference number provided.
- Step 8: Collect your passport (or receive it by courier) with the visa stamp.
