An NOC (No Objection Certificate) is a letter from your employer or organisation stating that they have no objection to you travelling abroad during a specified period. Most Schengen countries, the UK, Canada, Japan, and Australia require an NOC from salaried applicants as proof of approved leave and intent to return to your job. This guide explains what an NOC must contain and provides a ready-to-use template.
Who needs to submit an NOC?
- Salaried employees — Almost always required. The NOC confirms your employer approves the leave and expects you back.
- Self-employed / business owners — No NOC needed. Instead, submit a letter on your own company letterhead written by you in your capacity as owner.
- Students — Submit a letter from your college/university instead of an NOC, stating enrolment and confirmed leave period.
- Retired / unemployed / housewives — NOC not applicable. Submit alternate proof of ties (property, investments, family).
What an NOC must contain
- Printed on your company's official letterhead with logo and address
- Addressed to "The Consulate General of [Country]" or "To whomsoever it may concern"
- Your full name, employee ID, designation, and joining date
- Annual salary (in INR) and department
- Exact leave dates (start date and return date)
- Statement that your employer has no objection to the travel
- Confirmation that your employment will continue after your return
- Signed by your manager or HR with name, title, contact, date

- Unsigned or signed by someone without clear authority
- Dated more than 30 days before visa submission
- No contact number for the signer
