Sometimes travel plans change suddenly — a family emergency, a business meeting, a wedding abroad. The good news: several countries offer priority or expedite visa services that compress standard processing by 50-80%. The bad news: most Schengen countries don't, and you'll need to plan around their 15-day minimum.

Priority options by country

UK priority and super-priority

The UK offers two paid priority tiers. Priority (£500) cuts processing to about 5 business days from the biometric appointment. Super-priority (£1,000) offers a next-business-day decision. Both are add-ons purchased during the online application and must be booked at a VFS centre that supports them — not all VFS centres do. London priority visas are only available through New Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore.

Schengen — is there any way to speed it up?

Officially, no. Schengen consulates process in 15 calendar days (sometimes up to 45 during peak season) and do not offer paid expedite. In genuine emergencies (serious illness of a family member, funeral, time-sensitive business), you can request priority handling through the consulate with supporting documents, but approval is discretionary. The consulate might consider you for an earlier slot but won't commit.

US B1/B2 emergency appointments

If you've scheduled a US visa interview and have a genuine emergency (medical, family death, urgent business requiring your presence), you can request an expedited interview appointment through the US Travel Docs portal. You need to submit the request with documentation proving the emergency. Approval is case-by-case and relatively common for well-documented emergencies.

What to do if you genuinely need a visa in 48 hours

  • UK — Super-priority service for £1,000. Next-business-day decision.
  • Dubai / UAE — Express 24-hour service. ~₹8,000 total.
  • Thailand / Indonesia / Malaysia — Visa-free or VoA, no advance application needed
  • Sri Lanka / Nepal / Bhutan — Visa-free or simple e-visa, same-day or VoA

Realistic emergency travel timeline

If you receive bad news today and need to fly in 48 hours, your practical options are visa-free destinations or the UK super-priority service. Schengen, US, Canada, and Australia cannot be done in 48 hours — plan for at least 2-4 weeks.

Frequently asked questions

?How fast can I get a UK visa from India?
UK super-priority service offers a next-business-day decision for an extra £1,000 on top of the standard £127 fee. Super-priority is available at VFS Global in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore.
?Is there a priority Schengen visa service?
No. Schengen countries do not offer paid priority processing. Standard processing is 15 calendar days. In genuine emergencies you can request expedited handling through the consulate, but approval is discretionary.
?How fast can I get a US visa from India?
The US doesn't offer priority services, but you can request an expedited interview appointment if you have a genuine emergency (medical, family death, urgent business). Once the interview happens, visa issuance takes 5-10 business days.
?Can I fly to Europe without a Schengen visa in an emergency?
No. There is no emergency-only Schengen entry for Indian passport holders. Your fastest option is to request priority handling through the consulate with supporting documentation, but this isn't guaranteed.
?Which countries can I visit on short notice from India?
Visa-free or VoA destinations: Thailand (60 days visa-free), Maldives, Indonesia, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia (visa-free), UAE (3-5 days standard visa). For short notice to other destinations, the UK super-priority service is the fastest paid option.
