Of the major destinations from India, only US B1/B2 requires a consular interview as a standard part of the process. Canada interviews are extremely rare (usually only if IRCC flags something). Schengen, UK, Australia, and Japan don't interview routinely. This guide covers the 15 most common US interview questions plus the rare Canada/Australia scenarios.
US B1/B2 — the 15 most common questions
- Why do you want to visit the US? Be specific and brief. "Tourism, visiting [specific cities]" is a good answer.
- How long will you stay? Give exact days or weeks.
- Have you been to the US before? Declare all previous trips.
- Who's funding the trip? If self-funded, say so confidently. If sponsored, name the sponsor.
- What do you do for a living? Job title + company + how long.
- What is your salary? Honest number. Officers cross-check with documents.
- Have you taken leave from your job? Yes, and it's approved (NOC ready).
- Are you married? Yes/no, and if yes, where is your spouse.
- Do you have children? Yes/no, ages.
- What will guarantee your return? Job, family, property — be specific.
- Do you have relatives in the US? Name them and their immigration status.
- Which cities will you visit? Have a real itinerary ready.
- Where will you stay? Hotel name or relative's address.
- What's your monthly salary? Honest, same as annual divided by 12.
- Have you travelled internationally before? Mention travel history.
What the consular officer is really testing
- Intent to return to India — The core of Section 214(b). Everything else is secondary.
- Consistency — Your DS-160 answers, documents, and spoken answers must match perfectly.
- Plausibility — Does your income support the trip? Is the purpose reasonable?
- Honesty — Officers can usually spot rehearsed or evasive answers.
- Preparedness — Confident, brief, factual answers signal a genuine applicant.
Sample answers — good vs bad
Q: Why do you want to visit the US?
Good: "Tourism. I want to visit New York, Washington DC, and Niagara Falls for 10 days with my spouse. It's been on our list for a few years and we finally have the time and savings."
Bad: "I just want to see America, it's my dream." (Vague, emotional, unprepared.)
Q: What guarantees your return to India?
Good: "I work at [Company] as a [role] since 2019. My parents live with us and I have an ongoing home loan. My wife runs a small business in Bengaluru. I have to be back at work on [return date]."
Bad: "I will return, I promise." (No specifics, no ties demonstrated.)
Canada and Australia interview scenarios
Canada — IRCC rarely interviews Indian visitor visa applicants. If you receive a request for an interview, it's because of something specific in your file — usually document inconsistencies or a past refusal. Treat it seriously and prepare to explain the specific issue.
Australia — Home Affairs does not routinely interview applicants. In rare cases they may call for clarification. Again, this is specific to your file.
Interview day preparation

- Bring your complete document packet organised neatly
- Have a 1-page itinerary summary to hand to the officer if asked

- Stay calm — interviews are 2-5 minutes long, nothing more
